Aryna Sabalenka is a three-time Grand Slam winner.

No. 2 Sabalenka defeated No. 6 Jessica Pegula of the United States in three sets on Saturday to win the US Open 7-5, 7-5.

Sabalenka now becomes the first woman to win the US Open and Australian Open in the same year since Germany’s Angelique Kerber in 2016.

Sabalenka, who adds the US Open title to her consecutive Australian Open victories, is currently ranked No. 2 in singles by the Women’s Tennis Association.

Her victory on Saturday left fans eager for her to reclaim her top spot from reigning world No. 1 Iga Świątek.

Pegula defeated Swiatek in the quarterfinals to advance to the final match against Sabalenka.

The victory marked redemption for Sabalenka, who also reached the final of the 2023 US Open.

Sabalenka won the first set against American Coco Gauff, but Gauff came back to end the Belarusian star’s title hopes by winning 2-6, 6-3, 6-2.

This was Sabalenka’s second straight win against Pegula, whom she also defeated in the final of the Cincinnati Open in August.

Saturday’s match was a thrilling battle, with Pegula winning five games in a row and coming within one serve of a set point in the second set.

Although Sabalenka came back to win in three sets, fans were still impressed with Pegula’s performance, especially as her run to the final saw her secure a surprise victory over the world No. 1.

Sabalenka, who is riding a 12-race winning streak stripehas now won 27 of her last 28 hardcourt matches.

She and Kerber are the only women, along with Stefanie Graf, Monica Seles and Martina Hingis, to have won two hard-court Opens in the same year, according to the WTA.
