DHS Identifies Salmonella Infections Linked to Recalled Eggs from Milo’s Poultry Farms

MADISON, Wis. (WBAY) – A voluntary recall has been issued for eggs branded “Milo’s Poultry Farms” and “Tony’s Fresh Market.” Forty-two people in Wisconsin have been sickened, the Wisconsin Department of Health Services (DHS) reported Friday.

DHS, along with the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade, and Consumer Protection (DATCP), local health departments, and federal partners, are investigating a multistate outbreak of Salmonella infections linked to eggs from a Wisconsin farm. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 65 people in nine states have been infected with the outbreak strain of Salmonella. This includes 42 people living in Wisconsin.

According to DATCP, Milo’s Poultry Farms LLC of Bonduel issued the recall on Friday because the eggs may be contaminated with Salmonella.

Salmonella can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and people with weakened immune systems.

According to DHS, the eggs were distributed in Wisconsin, Illinois and Michigan through food service retailers and distributors, and have now been recalled. The recall includes all types of eggs, such as conventional cage-free, organic and non-GMO, carton sizes and expiration dates in containers labeled “Milo’s Poultry Farms” or “Tony’s Fresh Market.”

Anyone who has purchased the recalled eggs is advised not to eat or cook with them and to throw them away. Restaurants are not allowed to sell or serve recalled eggs.

Milo’s Poultry Farms eggs were distributed through retail and foodservice distributors in Wisconsin, Illinois and Michigan.

This recall includes:

  • All carton sizes and egg types are labeled “Milo’s Poultry Farms.” All expiration dates are affected by this recall.
  • All carton sizes of Tony’s Fresh Market brand eggs. This recall applies to all expiration dates.
  • All cases of eggs for retail distribution. This recall applies to all expiration dates.

The recall was initiated after the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) notified the company that environmental samples tested positive for the bacteria.

The FDA also performed a full genome sequence and found that the samples were linked to an ongoing Salmonella investigation into the outbreak.

Milo’s Poultry Farms, LLC has ceased production and distribution at this time and will be appropriately testing and sanitizing its farms and processing equipment.

Consumers who purchased eggs from Milo’s Poultry Farms or Tony’s Fresh Market are urged not to consume them. Consumers with questions may contact the company at (715) 758-6709.

If you have eaten any of the recalled eggs and are experiencing symptoms of Salmonella infection, contact a health care provider immediately. Let them know that you may have come into contact with Salmonella. Signs and symptoms of Salmonella infection include diarrhea, abdominal pain, fever, and vomiting that lasts for several days.
