Jack Draper after vomiting in US Open defeat: I would never give up

Jack Draper never considered giving up after his straight-sets semi-final defeat to top-seeded Jannik Sinner on Friday, the Briton said, after a gruelling match in which he vomited three times.

The 25th-seeded player had not dropped a set before Friday in New York, but his dream of reaching a first major semifinal quickly turned into a nightmare. The heat, humidity and nerves left him feeling sick in the second set.

The 22-year-old said it only got worse from there, as he felt dizzy because he couldn’t take in much fluid. He lost 7-5 7-6(3) 6-2.

“I’m not going to give up in the semi-finals of a Grand Slam. I know that the last set, you know, it probably looked like that from the sidelines or on TV, it didn’t look great,” he said.

“I fought hard. You know, I’m proud of myself. I tried to fight as hard as I could. But against someone like him, I’m not going to make it.”

Draper was able to take plenty of positives from his tenth major tournament, becoming the first Briton to reach the semi-finals of the US Open since Andy Murray won the tournament 12 years ago.

Draper was ranked 123rd when he made an inspiring run to the fourth round last year despite an injury-plagued season and believes he will achieve better results with more experience.

“I just have to keep learning, keep growing and face situations like today where I get stuck,” he said.

“It’s about gaining experience, doing the right things, training consistently and over time you get better, stronger and better.”
