Buy The Shining and its sequel on 4K Blu-Ray for a super cheap price before they sell out

One haunted hotel, two great movies. That’s the deal currently available at Amazon, as the 4K Blu-rays of The Shining and its sequel Doctor Sleep have just seen their prices shattered like a wooden door tried to stop a Johnny Carson show fan with an axe. Normally $42, The Shining is available for just $15, while Doctor Sleep has been marked down from $25 to $13. Combined, that’s a pretty awesome deal for Stanley Kubrick’s masterpiece and Mike Flanagan’s terrific sequel.

The 4K Blu-ray edition of The Shining includes a wealth of additional content, as well as the film on a standard Blu-ray disc and a digital streaming code. For bonus material, there’s a great selection of features and documentaries that go behind the camera of this legendary film:

  • Commentary by Steadicam inventor and operator Garrett Brown and historian John Baxter
  • The Making of The Shining by Vivian Kubrick
  • View from the Overlook Hotel
  • The Making of The Shining
  • The Visions of Stanley Kubrick and Wendy Carlos

If you haven’t seen it yet, The Shining is a masterclass in psychological horror. Inspired by a Stephen King novel and considered one of director Stanley Kubrick’s all-time greatest films—and a living hell for the late Shelley Duvall—it stars Jack Nicholson as a writer who takes a job as a winter caretaker at a hotel, bringing along his wife and young son. Unaware that the hotel is haunted, the ghosts that inhabit it have murderous plans for the Torrances. Add to that latent psychic powers, one of the most quotable quotes of all time, and an excellent spoof of The Simpsons, and you’ve got one unnerving work of art.

Doctor Sleep, the sequel directed by Mike Flanagan, best known for several critically acclaimed Netflix series that let you sleep with the lights on, was released in 2019. It stars Ewan McGregor as Dan Torrance, the son of Jack Torrance, as he attempts to find closure and some semblance of peace. After meeting Abra, a teenager who also possesses psychic Shining abilities similar to his own, Torrance must battle the ruthless Rose the Hat and her minions, The True Knot, who feed on the Shining of innocents in their quest for immortality.

The sequel to The Shining was well-received when it first came out, and this director’s cut version on this Blu-ray expands the film with several extra scenes. It was already a good film, but this version makes it even better. For the extras, there are two documentaries that chronicle the production process of the sequel from start to finish.

Big fans of The Shining should also check out the 1997 TV miniseries, which hit Blu-ray earlier this year at a nice discount. King never liked Kubrick’s version of his beloved 1977 novel, which eventually led the author to write and produce a three-episode TV special that aired on ABC. Though the series received positive reviews when it first aired nearly two decades ago, time has not been kind to this adaptation. Still, the 4.5-hour miniseries is definitely worth checking out if you’re looking for another tour of the Overlook Hotel.

Fans of The Shining can also look forward to a new book box set, and it sounds terribly cool. On November 26th, Taschen is releasing a two-part box set called Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining. Written by JW Rinzler and edited by former Pixar director and The Shining expert Lee Unkrich, the 1,396-page hardcover set is being billed as the definitive compendium for Kubrick’s film. It features tons of never-before-seen photos and content, and is based on hundreds of hours of interviews. It even has a foreword by Steven Spielberg. You can pre-order Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining box set for $75 at Amazon, which is 40% off the list price of $125.

While Kubrick’s film adaptation is considered by many to be one of the greatest horror films of all time, King’s original book is also one of the best horror novels of the last 50 years. The book is quite different from the film in many ways, so if you’ve never read it, do yourself a favor and pick it up along with the 4K Blu-ray. King’s Doctor Sleep novelization is also great, and the hardcover edition is currently on sale at Amazon for a steal.
