Tyla Shares ‘Breathe Me’ Music Video Filmed in Japan

Both songs appear on the South African pop artist’s eponymous debut album

The storyline Tyla began unraveling in the music video for her single “Truth or Dare” and continues in the accompanying visual for her latest single, “Breathe Me.” At the end of the first video, Tyla tears off into the night after a long day of being chased in her car by an obsessive ex. At the beginning of the second, she leans out of a car window, breathing in the euphoria of an all-night date she actually wants to be on.

“Breathe Me” is timestamped early in the video, starting at 10:47 p.m. in Osaka, Japan. Tyla giggles and smiles blissfully as she heads to a karaoke room. She sweetly belts out the tender pop tune, serenade-style, to her date before holding out the mic for him to join in with a few lip-synching ad-libs of her own. The rest of the evening takes them around town, stopping at food trucks and a late-night 7-Eleven snack run. The final time stamp is 2:24 a.m.

Both “Truth or Dare” and “Breathe Me” appear on Tyla’s eponymous debut album, which was released earlier this year. “It’s my introduction, so I just wanted to make it easy: Tijl. Just plain and simple, letting people know that I’m here. This is me. This is what I’m bringing,” the musician previously said Rolling Stone about starting a self-titled record. “I really wanted to make a statement, because I think that shows confidence, and I’m just ready. I’ve been working on this for so long. And even though people think I just arrived a few weeks ago, I’ve literally been working on this for a long time.”

And she’s making a killing. While many pop album cycles have come and gone throughout the year, Tyla is on her fifth single from the album. She kicked off 2023 with the viral hit “Water,” which was followed earlier this year by “Truth or Dare” in February, “Art” in April, and “Jump” in May.

“I hope more people tune in and see what we have to offer because we’re really taking it to another level,” Tyla added. “I don’t think people understand the plans that we have. Everything that I have planned to do and the music and the culture and everything that comes with it… it’s bigger than people think.”
