Noah Lyles wins the men’s 100 meters at the US Olympic track trials, Christian Coleman staggers to fourth place

EUGENE, Ore. – Noah Lyles has taken the first step in his goal for the vaunted sprint double: winning the U.S. championship in the men’s 100-meter final.

Lyles posted a career-best time in Sunday’s finals, running the 100 in 9.83 seconds during the big event of Day 3 of the U.S. Olympic Track and Field Trials. He used a late surge in the final 10 meters to take the victory.

Lyles needed his best as “Kung Fu” Kenny Bednarek and Fred Kerley brought their A-games. Both also posted personal bests; Bednarek at 9.87 and Kerley at 9.88.

Lyles, Bednarek and Kerley will represent the US in the 100 meters in Paris.

Christian Coleman just missed the finish, finishing fourth at 9.93 seconds. High school phenom Christian Miller placed fifth at 9.98. Both are in the mix for the men’s relay pool.

Lyles adds U.S. champion to his 100-meter resume, including gold at the 2023 World Championships and 2018 National Championships.

Now he turns his attention to the 200-meter race, his best event. Lyles wants to become the first American since Michael Johnson in 1996 to win both the 100 and 200 at the Olympic Games.

The men’s 200 meters starts on Thursday with the heats in the first round.
