The Grizzlies reported that GG Jackson suffered a fractured fifth metatarsal in his right foot earlier this week and will undergo surgery next week.

“During a basketball game outside Dallas on August 27, Jackson II made an unsteady landing on his right foot after attempting a contested layup,” the Grizzlies said in a statement, per Damichael Cole of the Commercial appeal of Memphis“Subsequent scans revealed he had a broken fifth metatarsal bone in his right foot, which will require surgery to repair.”

Jackson averaged 14.6 points, 4.1 rebounds and 1.2 assists in 48 games for the Grizzlies in 2023-24. The 2023 second-round pick showed promise in his rookie season, but his injury could make it difficult to build on that during his sophomore campaign.

The Grizzlies went 27-55, missing the postseason for the first time since 2020. The season was marred by the unavailability of Ja Morant, who played in just nine games.

Memphis took Zach Edey in the 2024 NBA Draft and is hoping a core built around Morant, Jaren Jackson, Marcus Smart, Desmond Bane and Edey can carry the team back to the postseason. A solid bench option like Jackson would have helped, but the franchise is hoping he can make an impact at some point during the season.
