The “talk season” is officially over and it’s time for the first full college football Saturday of 2024.

Entering Week 1, Clemson has the toughest draw of any team in the preseason Top 25 polls. The 14th-ranked Tigers will play No. 1 Georgia at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta. Kickoff is at noon ET on Saturday. The game will be televised nationally on ABC.

As of Friday morning, Georgia (according to FanDuel Sportsbook) was listed with a 12.5-point lead over Clemson, marking a slight shift in the Tigers’ favor.

For Clemson, this game could show just how wide the gulf is between a program that made six straight College Football Playoff appearances (from 2015-2020) and whether Dabo Swinney’s team can still be mentioned in the same breath as the top tier of college football programs.

ESPN’s Heather Dinich said this week that the game is a “barometer” to gauge where Clemson sits in the national landscape and the extent to which the narrative holds true about whether the Tigers (without using the transfer portal) can still fully compete in the modern era after a 9-4 season in 2023.

For Georgia, the Bulldogs enter the season with expectations that they won’t make it to the championship game. They’ve won two of the last three College Football Playoff titles and nearly made it three in a row last season before losing to Alabama in the SEC Championship Game.
