Arshad Nadeem receives second highest civilian honour from President Zardari

Olympic champion Arshad Nadeem on Thursday received the Hilal-e-Imtiaz, Pakistan’s second-highest civilian honour, in recognition of his remarkable performance at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

The award was presented by Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari at a ceremony at the Presidential House in Islamabad.

Nadeem made history by winning Pakistan’s first gold medal in over 40 years with a record performance in the men’s javelin throw.

His throw of 92.97 meters set a new Olympic record, ending the nation’s long wait for Olympic glory. Despite the challenges, including limited access to facilities and training resources, Nadeem’s determination led him to this monumental victory.

In response to his achievement, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif announced on August 13 that Nadeem would be honoured with the Hilal-e-Imtiaz.

The Prime Minister also hosted a grand dinner for Nadeem and announced a prize of Rs 150 million. In addition, plans were announced to set up the “Arshad Nadeem High-Performance Academy” at the Jinnah Stadium in Islamabad, aimed at nurturing future talent.

Nadeem’s victory was celebrated nationwide, with Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif presenting him with a cheque for Rs 100 million and a car with the special registration number “PAK 92.97”.

The Sindh government also contributed Rs. 50 million. Numerous private and government agencies have rewarded Nadeem for his extraordinary achievement, marking a proud moment for Pakistan on the global athletic stage.
