Lauren Smith has resigned as manager of Bristol City Women, Mail Sport reports.

Smith, who has been in charge of the club since 2021, is said to have informed her players of the decision on Monday afternoon.

Last season the Robins were relegated to the Championship after Smith had led them to promotion the previous season.

Smith’s departure has thrown the club into chaos with just two weeks left until the new season starts.

Ten players have left the club after they were relegated to the second division, while only three new players have joined.

Experienced players such as Rachel Furness, Lisa Evans and Megan Connolly have left the club, as have promising youngsters Naomi Layzell and Maddi Wilde.

Speaking after the club’s relegation, Smith indicated she would remain in her role. “We need to start looking at what next year looks like,” Smith said.

“I’m going to work with the chairman to make sure we do what we need to do to make sure we’re stronger next year.

“We need to keep building, both on and off the pitch. And we need to make sure our fans are as great next year as they are today.”

‘We as a club are all part of that and we will ensure we continue this trend and the excitement surrounding women’s football in Bristol.’

The Robins will play all their home games at Ashton Gate next season despite being relegated to the Championship.

Mail Sport has contacted Bristol City for comment.
