New England Patriots quarterback Jacoby Brissett suffered a right shoulder injury during Sunday’s exhibition game against the Washington Commanders and it is uncertain whether he will return, the team announced.

Brissett took a hard sack on the Patriots’ first drive of the game and came to the sideline with a grimace and clutching his right shoulder. He did not return to the field on the next drive.

According to ESPN’s Mike Reiss, New England had planned to have Brissett play one or two drives in the final preseason exhibition game.

In his limited action Sunday, Brissett threw for 19 yards on 2-of-4 passing. Should he be done for the night, Brissett will have finished the preseason with 36 passing yards on 5-of-14 passing.

Brissett joined the Patriots this offseason after replacing Sam Howell in Washington last season. With the Commanders, he threw for 224 yards and scored three touchdowns on 18 of 23 passes.

In his final full season as a starter for the Cleveland Browns in 2022, Brissett had 2,608 passing yards, 12 touchdowns and six interceptions.

Whether Brissett will be the Patriots’ starter this season is still up in the air. New England drafted Drake Maye with the third overall pick and he’s had an impressive preseason, but head coach Jerod Mayo said the team will wait until after the preseason to officially name a starter.

“We still don’t know,” Mayo said this week, via Grant Gordon of NFL.com. “We have one more preseason game, and then the week after that. When I know, I’ll let you know.”

If Brissett’s shoulder injury from Sunday is serious, New England may have no choice but to start Maye, but the Patriots would likely prefer more depth at the position rather than an easy decision.
