Newcastle interested in Chelsea star as they explore alternatives to Guehi

According to The Athletic, Newcastle are interested in Chelsea defender Axel Disasi as they work on alternative options in the event a deal cannot be struck for Marc Guehi.

The Magpies have yet to launch in the transfer market and have only signed Lloyd Kelly, John Ruddy, William Osula and Odysseas Vlachodimos as the deadline fast approaches.

Guehi has been identified as their top target, but they have so far failed to reach an agreement with Palace for the England international and have had multiple bids rejected.

The Eagles are believed to value the 24-year-old at around £65-£70 million, a figure Newcastle have apparently yet to reach, but they suffered a setback in their search for a new player on Tuesday night.

It has been reported that Fulham have reached an agreement in principle with Palace over centre-back Joachim Andersen, who started all 38 Premier League games last season.

While this does not mean that Guehi will not leave, it seems unlikely that the Eagles will let go of their first choice central defensive duo from last season in the same transfer window as there is little time left to replace them.

David Ornstein of The Athletic reported that Newcastle have been doing more research into alternative players in case a deal can’t be reached, with Chelsea star Disasi and Bayer Leverkusen’s Edmond Tapsoba also interested, he said.

Disasi only joined Chelsea from Monaco last summer and has played regularly under Mauricio Pochettino, making 44 appearances in all competitions as the Blues secured a top-six finish.

The 26-year-old player underwent surgery for a hernia last summer and therefore did not play at all in the preparation for the new season. He was also not in the squad for the defeat to Manchester City at Stamford Bridge last weekend.

He seems to have become surplus to requirements in West London after just one season and apparently does not fit the style that Enzo Maresca wants to play. It will be interesting to see if Newcastle can make good on their interest.
