Cowboys owner Jerry Jones still optimistic about new deal with CeeDee Lamb despite opposition: ‘We’ll figure it out together’

CeeDee Lamb continues to sit out of training camp, but Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said Tuesday the two sides have had more “promising conversations” about his new contract extension with the franchise.

And, perhaps most importantly, Jones said nothing that sparked a social media outcry and prompted Lamb to respond publicly.

Jones said Wednesday during training camp in Southern California that he was optimistic Lamb would have a new deal in place in time for the Sept. 8 season opener against the Cleveland Browns.

“I guess I’m (optimistic) and when I say that, it doesn’t sound very promising,” Jones said, via ESPN’s Todd Archer. “The facts are I believe we’re going to get together. I don’t want to speak for him. That’s not what I’m trying to do. But we wouldn’t have offered him what we offered him if we didn’t want him to be here.”

Lamb has yet to attend training camp with the Cowboys this fall as he seeks a new long-term deal with the organization. He’s entering the final year of his rookie deal with a $17.9 million fifth-year option. While it’s unclear what amount Lamb and the Cowboys are working with in their negotiations, Minnesota Vikings star Justin Jefferson reset the market earlier this summer with a four-year, $140 million extension.

Lamb amassed 1,749 yards and 12 touchdowns on 135 catches last season, all career highs for the former Oklahoma star. He also helped the Cowboys reach the playoffs for the third straight season, despite being eliminated in the wild-card round.

Jones’ comments came a few weeks after he initially said there was no sense of urgency in getting Lamb’s deal done, prompting Lamb to remove “America’s Team” from his social media bio and post a very brief message in response.

Jones attempted to clear that up a few days later, admitting that his comments got him “in trouble.”

“I understand the fear that’s out there (about) whether you’re missed or not,” Jones said. “Well, CeeDee: You’re missed.”

As for when that deal will be done, Jones had nothing to offer. Talks between the two sides continue as the Cowboys prepare for their final preseason game this weekend and then their season opener in less than two weeks.

“I don’t mean to be insensitive to our fans or to CeeDee, but we’re in good shape and we’re having promising conversations,” Jones said Tuesday. “You say, ‘Well, why are you still talking? Why aren’t you doing something?’ Again, like anything, it gets you both there at the same time.

“But I believe it has the right amount of everything — emphasis, importance — for everyone involved in this and we’ll see how it goes.”
