Cameron Young scores a sensational 59 to rocket up the Travelers Championship leaderboard

Cameron Young is celebrating

Cameron Young reached the 13th sub-60 round on the PGA Tour, but left his chip for a record 58 woefully short in the third round of the Travelers Championship.

The world number 23, who has finished second on the tour seven times, catapulted himself into contention at TPC River Highlands with a superb round that saw him cover the front nine in 28 after clearing off the fairway for Eagle, and also narrowly lost on a hole-in-one.

Needing to birdie two of the last three holes to match Jim Furyk’s 58 at this course in 2016, he left a seven-footer on the side of the cup on the 16th, but hit his approach on the next even closer to being at 11 under.

He fell short of the 18th green and subsequently left his chip part of the record ten feet below the hole, but held the nerve to write his name in the history books.

Young’s highlights on the front nine saw him hole from 142 yards for an eagle two on the third, after opening with two birdies, and then nearly reach the eighth from 218 yards.

After the turn, the American drove the 280 yards par-four 15th for a four-foot eagle to get him into double figures, and his remarkable round took him to 13 under and level with Tom Kim, who finished another half-hour after the exit.

Scores are traditionally low at the final signature event of the season and Sheffield’s Matt Fitzpatrick took advantage with a flawless round of 63 to move to eight under.

“I’ve had some mediocre results lately, but I feel like the golf I’ve been playing has been better than that,” he said in his post-round interview.

“To have a day like today, where things start to happen, it feels like I’m being rewarded for good photos. It was a lot of fun to do.”
