The Dallas Cowboys reportedly bolstered their defensive line on Wednesday, turning to a division rival to do so.

NFL insider Jordan Schultz reported that the Cowboys have acquired defensive tackle Jordan Phillips from the New York Giants.

According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the Giants will receive a sixth-round pick in 2026, while a seventh-round pick will also be sent to the Cowboys:

This means New York had already let Phillips go before he had even played a single game for the team, as the company signed him in April.

There was a time when Phillips would have been seen as a key addition, after all, he recorded 9.5 sacks during the 2019 season as a member of the Buffalo Bills and helped lead them to the playoffs.

However, he has struggled to match that impact while playing for the Arizona Cardinals in 2020 and 2021 before returning to the Bills in 2022 and 2023. The 2015 second-round pick also played for the Miami Dolphins for the first three seasons of his career.

Phillips played a key role for the Bills last season, finishing with 15 tackles, 2.5 sacks and five passes defensed in 14 games.

He wasn’t as effective as even the modest numbers would indicate, as Pro Football Focus gave him a lowly player rating of 35.8. It was a significant drop from even the 62.7 he finished with during the 2022 season.

Still, the Cowboys took a chance on the 31-year-old and hope he can become an experienced player who can bolster their defensive tackle roster.

Dallas opens the regular season on September 8 against the Cleveland Browns.
