757 natives have mixed results at U.S. Olympic track and field trials – The Virginian-Pilot

TRACK AND FIELD

Two Hampton Roads residents narrowly missed qualifying for the U.S. Olympic team during Monday’s track and field trials in Eugene, Oregon, but a third is off to a strong start in his event.

Michaela Rose of Suffolk placed fourth in the women’s 800 meters, finishing in 1:59.32. The top three finishers earned bids to the Paris Games.

Chesapeake’s Quincy Wilson finished sixth in the men’s 400 meters in 44.94. The 16-year-old is now waiting to see if he will be selected for the 4×400 relay team.

Chesapeake’s Grant Holloway easily won his first-round heat in the 110 hurdles. The former Grassfield High star clocked a time of 12.92 seconds, making him the world leader. The semi-finals will be held on Thursday.

  • Norfolk State athlete Premier Wynn qualified for the World U20 Track and Field Championships by finishing second in the 400-meter hurdles at the USATF U20 Championships earlier this month in Eugene, Oregon. He set a personal best of 50.58 seconds.

Monarchs release 10 player class

The Old Dominion women’s basketball team has announced a 10-player signing for the 2024-2025 season:

  • 5-5 guard Sarai Estupiñan (UTSA)
  • 5-6 guard Simaru Fields (Gulf Coast CC of Florida)
  • 5-8 guard Hama’ya Fielder (Pearl River CC of Mississippi)
  • 5-10 guard Nisaa Muhammad (DeSoto High/Texas)
  • 5-10 guard Kelsey Thompson (South Alabama)
  • 5-10 guard/forward Mariah Clayton (Duncanville High/Texas)
  • 6-0 guard/forward Camryn Hill (Hampton)
  • 6-1 guard Jadyn Atchison (Colorado)
  • 6-2 forward Marie Kenembeni (Angelina College of Texas)
  • 6-3 forward Sarah Hammack Fitzgerald (Campbell).

The group includes five transfers from Division I programs, two JUCO All-Americans and three players who have combined to win four Texas State High School championships.

COLLEGE AWARDS

Peninsula Club honors Johnson

The Peninsula Sports Club has named Norfolk State women’s basketball player Diamond Johnson its Outstanding In-State College/University Female Athlete of the Year.

Johnson averaged 20.2 points, 5.4 rebounds, 3.8 steals and 2.9 assists in 23 games last season. She earned several honors from the MEAC, including Newcomer of the Year, Most Outstanding Player of the Tournament and all-conference first team and defensive team. She also made the BOXTOROW HBCU All America first team.

  • The Tafari Bishop of Norfolk State has been named to the College Sports Communicators Academic All-District Team.
  • Four William & Mary women’s lacrosse players – Kate Draddy, Maresa Moyer, Lauren Rothstein and Courtney Vasquenza – have made the CSC Academic All-District Team.
  • Five William & Mary men’s gymnasts – Malcolm Baytop, Aidan Cuy, Alek Kuzmenchuk, Sam Lee and Evan Sikra – have made the CSC At-Large Academic All-District Team.
  • Two William & Mary hockey players – Jayden Moon and Pyper Friedman – have made the CSC Academic All-District Team.
  • Four Christopher Newport men’s lacrosse players – Robby Adams, Michael Brost, Luke Nardone and Aidan Wheeler – and four women’s lacrosse players – Hope Hunter, Emma Jackson, Eleanor Collins and Julia Iapicca – have made the CSC Academic All-District Team.
  • Christopher Newport field hockey players Katie Abendschoen and Abby Asuncion have been selected to the CSC Academic All-District Team.
  • UVA placed 11 athletes on the CSC At-Large Academic All-District Team. The men’s athletes included Justin McCoy (wrestling), Kyle Montaperto (wrestling), Cole Kastner (lacrosse), Connor Shellenberger (lacrosse) and Chase Yager (lacrosse). The women’s athletes were Laura Janssen (hockey), Mackenzie Hoeg (lacrosse), Morgan Schwab (lacrosse), Maggie Bostain (lacrosse), Amanda Sambach (golf) and Lauren Benedict (rowing).
  • Both the UVA men’s and women’s swimming programs have been named Scholar All-America Teams for the spring semester by the College Swimming and Diving Coaches Association of America.

  • Virginia Tech will play Saint Joseph’s in the 2024 Holiday Hoopfest in men’s basketball on Dec. 21 at The Palestra in Philadelphia. It will be the seventh time the two former Atlantic 10 Conference rivals have met.
  • UVA infielder Henry Ford and Virginia Tech pitcher Brett Renfrow are among 16 ACC players invited to participate in the USA Baseball Collegiate National Team Training Camp, which began Tuesday.
