Of his finalists, Arkansas, Kansas and Michigan (old staff) have hosted the five-star recruit during official visits. He currently has no other trips planned.

A native of Detroit, Michigan, Acuff also received offers from programs including Pitt, Nebraska, Providence, DePaul, Alabama, Xavier, LSU, St. John’s, Houston, Missouri, Rutgers, Ohio State, Indiana, UCF, Michigan State, TCU and Georgia Tech.

Acuff discusses the programs involved

In an earlier interview with On3, Darius Acuff discussed some of the schools that recruited him.

ARKANSAS: “Coach (John) Calipari treats you like family. He welcomed me during my visit (to Kentucky) as if he already knew me. It was a great visit overall. I really enjoyed it and I look forward to visiting them again in Arkansas. They like my aggressiveness. He says he likes how I can go downhill, my pace and my attitude to the game. They see that I love the game so much and that I just want to win.”

MICHIGAN: “It felt like home there. Coach (Juwan) Howard is my dog. He’s like a lost uncle. It was sad to see him go, but they have a great coach there now. One of the first things coach (Dusty) May said to me when he called was, ‘We play basketball here.’ It was a great conversation, he’s a good guy, a real basketball player. He is trying to get the program back on a winning path and bring what he built at FAU to Michigan.”

KANSAS: “Bill Self is a wild one, man, that’s my dog. It was a great visit overall. They felt like family there. It’s a different atmosphere. I went there for an unofficial visit, I went for a game. So I’ve been to Kansas twice. That atmosphere there is the best in college basketball, it was great to see. I talk to the staff all the time. Coach (Kurtis) Townsend and Coach Self, I talk to all of them. Our relationship has grown a lot.”

What he looks for in a school

Acuff said in an earlier interview with On3 what he wants in his future program.

“I want to play for a coach who lets me be myself, but also someone who holds me accountable for everything I do. Play for a coach who doesn’t let me do anything that will harm my game. I want to play for a coach who will develop me. I’m trying to go to the league.

“College is different, man. I’m going to look at the coaches they have and the nutritionists to get my body right. They play 40-minute games and it’s up and down. So I look at all that.”

Scouting report

“Darius Acuff steps onto the field with a swagger. He has long arms and a purposeful grip. Acuff is a capable multi-level scorer, showing great range off the bounce or catch. He’s comfortable in the midrange and he has a crafty bag around the edge. Acuff is faster than fast. He has a good first step, gets to his spots, but he needs to continue to work on his burst around the basket. Acuff is a solid passer, making reads and distributing passes on goal. He needs to continue to get strong passing off movement. He also likes to be shot. While he has racked up big scoring totals, at this point he’s mostly doing so with a lot of shot attempts. His overdribbling can kill the flow of an offense. Efficiency is a big thing at Acuff, his totals can be inefficient. He has a quick hand when guarding the ball in the open field. He seems to have a competitive fire and no fear.” – Jamie Shaw from On3
