49ers’ Brandon Aiyuk ‘not closer’ to contract after meeting – NBC Sports Bay Area & California

Last week’s meeting between Brandon Aiyuk and the 49ers may not have gone as well as initially reported.

NFL Media’s Tom Pelissero reported on Wednesday that both sides had a “good meeting” and that San Francisco plans to move forward with Aiyuk on the roster for the 2024 NFL season, but NFL insider Mike Garafolo said on Tuesday that they are “no closer to a deal” after their latest in-person talks.

But while a new contract has not yet been agreed upon, Garafolo said that doesn’t mean the 49ers are considering parting ways with the star receiver.

“For Aiyuk and the 49ers, they’ve had conversations recently,” Garafolo reported Tuesday on NFL Network’s “The Insiders” (h/t 49ers WebZone). “They’re no closer to a deal, as far as I know, but they’re also no closer to a trade request. That’s something he’s never explored in this case.

“In addition, he has to get back to work before the training camp to see if they can get something done.”

After weeks of shared tension and cryptic messages on social media, Aiyuk requested a meeting with the 49ers on Monday as the two sides continue to negotiate a lucrative contract extension.

“Here’s what I can tell you. Aiyuk and the 49ers leadership met on Monday at Aiyuk’s request,” Pelissero said last week. “It was a good meeting. From what I’m told, both sides said things that needed to be said and they’re continuing to work on it. It’s important to note here that there was never a trade request from Brandon Aiyuk. That hasn’t changed. The 49ers’ position hasn’t changed either, despite receiving calls to trade Aiyuk since draft week.

“They’re moving forward and they want Aiyuk to be a part of the team in 2024. So what I expect here is for all parties involved to go ahead and enjoy the Fourth of July holiday, and then regroup — they’ve got a couple more weeks here to see if they can get a deal done that ties Brandon Aiyuk to San Francisco long-term.”

While speculation continues to swirl, Aiyuk appeared on “The Pivot” podcast last week to clear up some things.

He explained his recent social media activities and spoke candidly about the feelings the contract negotiations have given him personally.

Ultimately, Aiyuk predicted which team he sees himself playing for in 2024, and it’s no different than the team he’s played for his entire NFL career so far.
