The 2024 T20 World Cup is finally over. After 55 grueling matches, the tournament came to an end with the Indian team lifting their second T20 World Cup trophy.

The Rohit Sharma-led team defeated South Africa by 7 runs to end their 11-year drought for an ICC trophy. The tournament had so many highs and lows, but in the end it became an instant success and cricket eventually became a popular sport in the US.

We witnessed some memorable batting and bowling performances, but while we celebrated the positives, there was a lot to reflect on towards the end of the tournament. Here at OneCricket, we talked about it The 4 biggest disappointments of the 2024 T20 World Cup.

4 Biggest Disappointments Of T20 World Cup 2024

4) Glenn Maxwell’s dismal batting performance

Much was expected of the ‘Big Show’ Glenn Maxwell, but the Australian all-rounder had a disappointing T20 World Cup campaign. Maxwell looked out of form in IPL 2024, but was expected to rise above the Ashes for the World Cup.

However, all he could do was collect 132 runs in 7 matches, and when the tea needed him most, Maxwell failed to deliver the goods.

3) West Indies as host country

No host nation has ever won a T20 World Cup, and as a result the Windies had a big task on their hands. Rovman Powell’s leading side started positively and remained undefeated throughout the group stage matches. However, disaster struck in the Super 8 stage.

In a group consisting of South Africa, England and the United States, West Indies could only beat the USA and were split in their matches against England and South Africa. The two defeats ended their entire unbeaten run in the group stage and they exited the tournament in Super 8.

2) New Zealand are eliminated in the group stage

The most consistent team at World Cups, New Zealand, has almost always made it to the semi-finals of ICC events. As in previous tournaments, they were expected to make it easily to the Super 8, in a group with the West Indies and Afghanistan. However, to everyone’s surprise, both Windies and Afghanistan blew them away as the Kane Williamson-led team crashed out of the group stage itself.

The Kiwis looked clueless throughout the tournament and had a disappointing campaign that led to their skipper, Williamson, relinquishing the white-ball captaincy.

1) The full US leg of the T20 WC

When ICC announced that USA will co-host the T20 World Cup alongside West Indies, doubts arose in everyone’s minds whether USA is the right country to host the tournament or not.

Those doubts grew as games, particularly at Nassau County Stadium, saw a series of low scores. The ball barely reached the bat, the outfield came under scrutiny, and the stadium was eventually demolished after the game against the US was over.

Moreover, the rain in Florida put ICC under further scanner as several matches were cancelled, affecting the outcome of the group stage matches.
