2024 Olympics LIVE: Opening Ceremony news and preparations as Andy Murray announces retirement after Games

Andy Murray’s Career Timeline

The Olympic Games will begin with a unique Opening Ceremony on Friday evening on the Seine, with competition starting on Saturday in Paris 2024 and running for 16 days.

Team GB will bring a total of 327 athletes to the Games, including Andy Murray, the two-time Olympic champion who announced upon arrival in Paris on Tuesday that this would be the final tennis tournament of his career – a fitting platform to end on after his successes in London and Rio de Janeiro.

Meanwhile, the Dutch Olympic team is under heavy scrutiny after convicted rapist Steven van de Velde was selected to play beach volleyball. The 29-year-old has been suspended from media duties and his place at the Games has been criticised by Australia’s Olympic chief.

How Roy Keane inspires Team GB to end 36 years of Olympic men’s hockey injuries

They even inspired one of Barry Davies’ most famous comments: “Where, oh where, were the Germans? And honestly, who cares?” said the Auntie’s husband, who lost all objectivity as Sherwani scored to secure a 3-1 triumph and Olympic gold in style.

Hockey came home after Seoul, but Britain’s men have only tasted a medal once since then, losing to Australia in the bronze medal match at London 2012. The women’s team, by contrast, have made the podium at the last three Games – two bronzes between their famous penalty shootout gold in Rio.

But whisper it softly: there is confidence as the men prepare to kick off their season in Paris 2024 against Spain at the Stade Yves-du-Manoir this weekend.

Travel chaos could disrupt Paris Olympics

According to the Mirror, airport workers in Paris have threatened strike action that could significantly disrupt the travel plans of Olympic spectators.

Staff at Paris Charles-de-Gaulle, Orly and Beauvais airports are demanding better wages.

Flights are continuing as normal, but fewer staff at airports could cause problems. 350,000 passengers will arrive in the French capital daily.

Bryan Habana expects ‘box office’ Antoine Dupont sevens to shine at the Olympics

French captain Dupont headlined last year’s World Cup on French soil, but the 27-year-old skipped the 2024 Six Nations tournament to focus on Olympic glory.

The Toulouse scrum half made an immediate impact in the shortened version of the match, helping Les Bleus to a first World Rugby SVNS series title with a grand final win over regular season winners Argentina.

“Antoine is a guy who is an absolute box office hit in every way,” former South African winger Habana, 41, told the PA news agency.

“It was a huge decision to miss the Six Nations but the seamless transition he’s made has been absolutely brilliant. We don’t know what a ceiling looks like for him yet because he keeps breaking through it.”
