What is the format of the Olympic Games for men?

The 16 teams were divided into four groups of four countries.

The group winners and runners-up advance to the knockout rounds.

It will then be a knockout tournament, with extra time and penalty kicks if necessary. There will be quarter-finals, semi-finals, a bronze medal match and a gold/silver medal match.

The tournament takes place in France, but largely outside Paris. In addition to the capital, matches will also be played in Bordeaux, Décines-Charpieu (Lyon), Marseille, Nantes, Nice and Saint-Étienne.

Why is the men’s competition for U23 players?

Men’s sports have many top competitions, many of which take place in the same year as the Olympic Games. For example, in 2024 both the European Championships and the Copa América were held just before the Olympic Games.

The Olympics are not included in the FIFA international competition calendar, meaning that countries cannot simply call up players. Selections are made based on discussions with clubs about a player’s release, which makes it impossible for the Olympics to be considered a senior tournament in the men’s game. This is very different from the women’s competition, which features full senior teams and does not take place in the same year as other tournaments.

For this reason, the men’s Olympic Games mainly consist of players under the age of 23, although each country is allowed to train up to three players over the age of 23.
