2024 NASCAR Charlotte Roval Cup grid: Shane van Gisbergen completes pole sweep

Shane van Gisbergen earned his first career pole position in the NASCAR Cup Series, beating playoff driver Tyler Reddick in qualifying at the Charlotte Motor Speedway Roval.

The three-time Supercars champion, who will move to Cup full-time next season with Trackhouse Racing, will make his 12th Cup start on Sunday (2 p.m. ET, NBC).

The New Zealander is racing full-time in the Xfinity Series this season and earlier Saturday took pole for that series’ playoff cutoff race at the Roval (where he will attempt to advance to the second round).

Driving a No. 13 Chevrolet fielded in Cup by Kaulig Racing (his Xfinity Series team, which also earned his first Cup pole), Van Gisbergen turned a lap of 1 minute, 22.704 seconds (99.246 mph).

“Thank you to this Kaulig Racing team,” Van Gisbergen told Kim Coon of NBC Sports. “This was a last-minute deal to come race here. Thanks to (team owner) Matt (Kaulig) and the guys for letting me drive their car. This Chevy is really fast. What a great day. I’m at a loss for words.”

Van Gisbergen becomes the sixth foreign-born driver to win a Cup pole and will attempt to earn his second Cup victory after making his debut in the Chicago Street Race last year.

But he will have to be careful as he races against 11 championship contenders trying to advance to the third round of the playoffs in Sunday’s cutoff race.

Four drivers will be eliminated from the title battle on Sunday.

“Make sure we race cleanly,” said Van Gisbergen. “I have to respect that there are a lot of playoff guys around me. I have to race respectfully. But we are here to win the race. Hopefully we have a good day.”

Reddick recovered to qualify second after spinning on the front stretch and causing a red flag when he failed to refire his No. 45 Toyota during the second practice session for Group 1.

AJ Allmendinger (van Gisbergen’s Kaulig teammate) qualified third.

Half of the 12 remaining playoff drivers heading into Sunday’s cutoff race made the top 10 of the final round of qualifying: Reddick, Joey Logano (starting fourth), Austin Cindric (fifth), Kyle Larson (sixth) , Chase Elliott (seventh) and William Byron (10th).

The six Cup play-off drivers who failed to advance to the final round of qualifying: Christopher Bell (starting 12th), Daniel Suarez (13th), Alex Bowman (17th), Chase Briscoe (25th), Ryan Blaney ( 14th) and Denny Hamlin (18th).
