What a season it was for Miller. Miller was voted MVP by the fans and became the seventh player in franchise history to score 100 points in a season. He was also one of the team’s emotional leaders all year, both on and off the ice.

Miller is a perfect example of a player who can flourish once a new coach is in place. Playing in Rick Tocchet’s system, Miller saw his play improve at both ends of the ice, leading to him earning both Selke and Hart votes last year. In addition to setting a new career high in points, he also set career highs in blocks and hits, while his plus/minus of +32 was a career-high.

Despite being used in a matchup role most nights, Miller’s even strength zone time numbers showed just how effective he was at shutting down the opposing team’s best players. He finished the regular season with 42.9% of his even strength time in the offensive zone, which ranked in the 85th percentile. He was also able to keep his defensive zone time under 40%, finishing the year at 39.6%. Ultimately, Miller did a great job of keeping the puck out of his defensive zone and onto the ice, which led to his best goals-against-60 at even strength since joining Vancouver.

The power play was also an area where Miller thrived last season, recording 30 assists for the second time in his career and reaching double figures for the second straight season. Ultimately, he was a threat whenever the puck was on his stick, as he could make roof shots or tape-to-tape cross-ice passes that often resulted in scoring opportunities.

As for the playoffs, Miller was one of the Canucks’ best players every night, tying for the team lead with 12 points and 42 hits in the 13 games. Miller was also dynamic in the faceoff dot, winning 58.6% of the 200+ faceoffs. Without Miller’s play, the Edmonton Oilers series could have taken a different turn, as he did a fantastic job of limiting Connor McDavid’s production for most of the series.

While Miller has had productive seasons with Vancouver, this may have been his best year yet. He has developed into a more complete player and a player that the fan base has come to love. Now entering his sixth season with the Canucks, Miller has the chance to do something that only Pavel Bure, who has scored 100 points in back-to-back seasons, can do.
